Redesigning an Accounting Platform: Creating a Seamless, User-Centered Flow Through Research and High-Fidelity Prototyping

I led the UX redesign of a digital accounting system, focusing on validating a new information architecture, improving user task flows, and enhancing usability through iterative research and testing. My work involved user interviews, high-fidelity prototyping, and building a scalable design system to ensure a consistent and intuitive experience.

PROBLEM
The digital accounting system’s new task flow needed to be validated to ensure it met users' needs, reduced errors, and aligned with business objectives. The Product Owner identified a risk that the updated information architecture might confuse users or introduce inefficiencies without proper testing and refinement.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
As the lead UX/UI designer for this flow validation project, I spearheaded the creation of a high-fidelity prototype and conducted user interviews to test the new architecture. I collaborated with the Product Owner and team members to design tasks, moderate sessions, gather insights, and iterate based on findings.

PROCESS
Research & Planning:
1. Collaborated with the PO to define testing objectives and select user participants.
2. Designed interview scripts and task scenarios tailored to the most critical flows.
3. Set up a Teams channel for real-time collaboration and updates.

Prototyping: Built a fully interactive high-fidelity prototype in Figma, ensuring alignment with atomic design principles and the company’s visual standards.

Analysis & Reporting: Synthesized insights into actionable recommendations.Identified key usability friction points and prioritized fixes. Presented findings in a team workshop to align on next steps.

SOLUTION
I optimized the flow based on user feedback by reorganizing key information elements, simplifying navigation, and clarifying task progress indicators. The improved design created a smoother, more intuitive experience, and reduced user confusion in critical accounting operations.

OUTCOMES & IMPACT
Identified 5 key usability issues that were resolved before launch, preventing costly rework.

Validated that 90% of users could complete core tasks without external help.

Positive internal feedback from Product Owner and stakeholders on usability improvements.

Created reusable design system components that saved time in future development cycles.

GOALS & SUCCESS CRITERIA
Project Goals: Validate the new task flow’s usability through real user testing. Identify friction points and areas for optimization. Build an interactive high-fidelity prototype aligned with the design system. Collect actionable insights to improve the final product before release.

Success indicators: Users complete key tasks successfully without confusion. Positive user feedback on clarity, ease of navigation, and task completion. Identified and resolved usability issues before development.

LEARNINGS
Conducting user interviews early in the design process was critical to uncover unexpected friction points. This experience reinforced the value of iterative validation and involving users directly to create more user-centered, effective solutions.
